Steampunk mania

In Jan 2015 I made a few steampunk-themed cards... mainly because I wanted some, but felt it would be horrribly tacky to make one for myself (even though I too had a birthday coming up).

Here are some of them.

#1. Swing card: the middle of the card swivels, revealing a different frame when open/closed. And yes, I'm a very messy scrapper.

Front.

Inside card.In fact this is not the complete card... As you can see, I added a few more extra touches to the card, but didn't take pictures of the "final product".

Plain back.

I'm not great at keeping track of my mats, but I'll do my best.

Materials list:
Paper: Main - Glitz Design "Fabulous Front with Coordinating Back Hoopla Frames H2921"; Beige tag/frontispiece: Prima Marketing Botanical Collection, "Candle Light" #842789
Pink Screen print: Hambly Screenprints "Home Decor" Screen prints HO678.
Heart die-cut: Cheery Lynn Designs, "Hearts 'n Gears" (Steampunk series) B378
Shoe birthday stamp: Joanna Sheen, "Girly Things!" JS363
Butterfly stamps, fan stamp: Anna Griffin Signature Stamp Collection, "18th Century Garden" (binder with stamps)
Alphabet stamps: from eBay seller. "Alphabet & number & symbol" Stamp size: 9x12x40MM (70 pcs).
Clock and feather charm: Bulk buy from Tradera.
Ribbons: 6mm brown velvet was from Panduro, the sheer pink from Joanna Sheen. Both 6mm.
Butterfly cutouts: was probably from Panduro, owned by a fellow crafter. I used a textured dusky rose cardstock and just rubbed them lightly on gold ink pad. They were flat, so I just turned up the wings to give them a bit of dimension.
The large cogwheel on the front was covered in Inkssentials Glossy Accents, although sadly it's not really visible.
p/s I bought a block sale of "Heat it Up!" embossing powder from a lady who had given up crafting on eBay. Just in case you wondered what brand I use.

#2. I put a lot of thought into this one, as it had to be something special, not too "girly" as it was for the DH. While I did like #1, I felt it was too bright and cheery to be a proper steampunk style. What I really wanted to do was a copy of this lovely card, but I don't own a Big Shot machine myself (nor the die necessary), so this is it's 2D poorer cousin (to paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson).

And, I discovered the joy of working with OHP transparencies, of which we had plenty lying around unused now that we all use laptops and whatnots at work/uni. Plus, by this time my order for a bunch of cogwheels and gears had arrived (bought from a seller on a Swedish auction site, Tradera).

Materials:
Paper:Glitz Design "Fabulous Front with Coordinating Back Vintage Blue Polka VB3470" ; 3M transparency film
Various stamps: My Mind's Eye, Lost & Found "Rosy "Everything" Stamps" item #LF2052, and "Union Square "Perfect" Stamps" item #LF1082.
Cover, Födelsedag stamp in copper emboss: Reprint, "Rund födelsedag" EZR042
Center, Dragonfly stamp: from Panduro Clear Stamps "Insekter" (insects, now out of print)
Center, heart die-cut: Cheery Lynn Designs, "Hearts 'n Gears" (Steampunk series) B378
Back, Fan stamp from Anna Griffin Signature Stamp Collection, "18th Century Garden"

This year I gave the DH an antique that he had been talking about for several years now: a miner's carbide lamp. Roughly a century old, and supposedly never used. It gave a good, bright light. I was lucky to pick this up at a bargain around Xmas, it was only around €40. I've seen lamps in worse condition going for around €20.

But I digress.... On to:

#3. I think this was my most successful steampunk-themed card, despite it being quite simple.

The colours and charms did the trick on this one, so I feel vindicated in the use of darker coloured paper for this theme.

As you can see (or perhaps not...), I utilized leftover Prima paper from card #1, with the lovely cogwheels prominently showing. Although they're about to be covered up in a bit...

After embellishing the transparencies with some suitable stamps (and StazOn ink - the stuff sticks on everything!), the left and right sides are folded/glued in, to make a normal "menu" card.

Then I worked on the cover... The more cogwheels the merrier!?

Inside of the finished card. I thought it might be fun to put some cogwheels on the inside instead of the cover, in order to create a fun optical effect.

Materials:

Paper: Glitz Design Traci Smith's "Fabulous Front with Coordinating Back, Vintage Love Damask VL2358"; rectangular piece: Prima Marketing Botanical Collection, "Candle Light" #842789  3M transparency film
Chandeliers, pointing finger/hand stamps My Mind's Eye Lost & Found "Union Square "Perfect" Stamps" item #LF1082.
Butterflies stamps: Anna Griffin Signature Stamp Collection, "18th Century Garden"
Alphabet stamps: from eBay seller. "Alphabet & number & symbol" Stamp size: 9x12x40MM (70 pcs).
Turquoise flower: Prima Flowers  Flower Can "Caboodles" Item #528669 (from 2009 - possibly out of print, it had large and small turquoise and faded orange coloured flowers).
Feather: from eBay seller, 2-4" feathers (mixed colours).
Cogwheels, clock charm: Bulk buy from Tradera.
Rhinestone stickers: probably from Panduro.
"40" sticker: Tim Holtz Idea-ology Salvage Stickers "Lost & Found" #TH92870
Turquoise satin ribbon from Joanna Sheen, 6mm.

#4. Phew. I was on a roll those couple of weeks!
After 2 cards with darker colour paper, I decided it was time for a change, and picked the most unlikely colour for a steampunk card... orange, cream, cyan-blue and pink. I don't like pink myself, but almost everyone else I know doesn't mind it so much, so I use it a lot in the cards that I make (but never keep myself, lol).

Materials:
Paper: Orange cardstock card from Papperix Color; leftover paper from previous projects, OHP transparency
Chandeliers stamps: My Mind's Eye Lost & Found "Union Square "Perfect" Stamps" item #LF1082.
Wing stamps:Viva Decor - My paper world - Silicone Stamps D2 "Crown, Lion and Wings"
Happy birthday heel(rose quarts emboss), Corset (in copper emboss): Joanna Sheen, "Girly Things!" JS363
Fan stamp on cover/transparency, all stamps on inside of card: Anna Griffin Signature Stamp Collection, "18th Century Garden"
Circular stamp on inside (copper emboss): Whimsy Everyday Circle Postmarks
Feather: from eBay seller, 2-4" feathers (mixed colours).
Cogwheels: Bulk buy from Tradera.
Pearl stickers: Panduro, red.
"40" sticker: Tim Holtz Idea-ology Salvage Stickers "Lost & Found" #TH92870
Turquoise satin ribbon from Joanna Sheen, 6mm.
Cloth tape (roses on black background): from local TGR store (probably out of print)

Those feathers... I bought a bunch of them from a Chinese seller on ebay. Actually I ordered them just after Xmas, and around the 3rd week of Jan they finally arrived... I think there were around 100 of them in the small pack, so we'll be seeing a lot more of them in the next few cards.

Until next time,
xoxo.
